Bactrim dosage

As for every medication that treats various conditions, Bactrim can be taken differently. The dosage of Bactrim depends on the type of infection and bacteria, height and weight of the patient, other medical conditions and other medication taken. Generally, Bactrim tablets are taken twice a day with food or on an empty stomach. You can choose any time of day for taking Bactrim, but it should be the same time(s) each day.

Bactrim dose for adults

Recommended dose of Bactrim for adults varies depending on the treated condition. General directions are:

  1. 2 Bactrim tablets every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days if treating urinary tract infections
  2. 2 Bactrim tablets every 12 hours for 5 days if treating diarrhea or shigellosis
  3. 2 Bactrim tablets every 12 hours for 14 days if treating acute chronic bronchitis
  4. number of Bactrim tablets is based on weight and taken every 6 hours for 14 to 21 days if treating Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia
  5. 1 Bactrim tablet daily for prevention of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia

Bactrim dose for children

Recommended dose of Bactrim for children is determined by weight. However, Bactrim is not used for treating children under two months old.
