Bactrim and pregnancy
Many serious infections nowadays can be treated only with the help of antibiotics. However, when these infections occur in pregnant women, they are afraid that antibiotics can do harm for the baby. Is Bactrim dangerous to pregnant women?

Antibiotics and pregnancy
Antibiotics are usually prescription medications. One of the reasons for this is the unclear effect on pregnant women. Although humankind successfully uses antibiotics for many years now, it is still unclear, are they safe enough to use for pregnant women. Some researches show that antibiotics are harmless - neither for expectant mother nor for the fetus, while others give some proofs of possible damage. The rule of the thumb that is widely acknowledged by doctors all over the world sounds like this: pregnant women should not take antibiotics, except in those cases when the potential benefits outweigh the risk to the baby.
Usage of Bactrim during pregnancy
Bactrim has not been studied in pregnant women. As it is an antibiotic, its usage during pregnancy has to be limited. Although doctors agree that the risk for birth defects or fetal death is probably very low, it is better not to use Bactrim if you are pregnant. Another reason for this is the principle of Bactrim work – it decreases the levels of folic acid, which is crucial for pregnant women and babies. If you really have to use Bactrim during pregnancy, you should absolutely take a folic acid supplement; and at higher doses than are normally recommended for pregnant women.
